There’s a moment in my novel, Last Bridge to Memphis, where the character of “Danny” (who is Elvis, still alive and kickin’ in the late 1980s), is having severe second thoughts about getting back on the horse, so to speak.
The chapter in which this takes place is titled, “You Gave Me A Mountain,” and with good reason. In that famous Elvis Presley song, he sings of having to climb one hill after another. And that’s how life is. One hill after another, and if you want to keep on living, you just have to scale them one by one.
By this time in the story, Danny has been way down in the valley and sees no path back up. But he’s willing to go on faith and try to climb that mountain one more time.
It’s kind of how I feel about the process of getting a book out to the world. I know myself. I wouldn’t be pushing so hard if I didn’t believe in it. I’ve taken on some challenges before, but this one is a biggie.
It’s a mountain, this time, for sure, but one I chose. The summit is in sight. And I’m going to see it through.
